That is what I got, but I bought them on eBay.co.uk. There are several sizes, so you would have to make sure that you get ones that are not too far from the dimensions in the CRL.
I did not like the seam between the front and the back so I made new back sides that was sunk into the frames. I was also afraid of boxes falling off if I used hooks, so I made belt loops by wet-forming some leather that I screwed on.
I also polished them up, but polishing revealed tiny cracks all over the boxes that I don't think can be buffed out.

Apparently, the dimensions in the CRL are from one brand of project boxes and not from the original kind. The screen-used boxes were apparently cigarette case boxes of sheet metal. I have found one in an antique store, but finding a matching pair is more difficult.

I would recommend these, which are what I wear and are screen accurate.

Same maker in both links, but not all might have accounts on the IOC forum.

The cast project boxes are about 11×6×2.5 cm, while the cigarette pack cases are around 9×6×2.5 cm, thereabouts. In other words, the project boxes are about 2 cm longer.

BTW. The CRL will probably require a lip around the back in the future for level 2 and 3 certification, so if you can get that in from the start that would be a plus.

Thanks, this will help!

Do you have any pictures of the "original" boxes you could post?

:)
